What a blocked gutter actually does
A gutter full of moss and leaves doesn't announce itself. It just quietly stops working, and the damage shows up somewhere else:
• Water overflows down the wall, and render that stays wet goes green
• Damp patches appear inside, usually on an upstairs corner
• Fascias and soffits soften and start to rot
• Frozen standing water splits the joints in winter
• Downpipes back up and blow the seals
A gutter clear costs a fraction of the cost to put right. It's the cheapest maintenance job on a house.
How I clean gutters
I use a gutter vacuum: a set of carbon fibre poles running up to a powerful vacuum in the van. It reaches your gutters from the ground and sucks out moss, silt, leaves and grit into a bin in the van. That means a few things for you. Nothing leans against your house, so there's no risk of a ladder marking the render or cracking a tile. Nothing lands in your borders — it all goes into the machine. And because there's a camera on the end of the pole, I can show you the state of the gutter before I start and prove it's clear when I've finished. It's also why I can do most houses in a couple of hours without a second person, which keeps the price sensible.
What a gutter clear includes

• Downpipe tops checked and cleared where I can reach them
• Before and after photos of every run, sent over on WhatsApp
• Everything taken away in the van — nothing left on your drive
• A heads-up if I spot a cracked bracket, a sagging run or a joint that's leaking, so you can get it sorted before winter
A gutter clear is the inside of the gutter. It doesn’t wash the outside: the white front of the gutter, the fascia board it’s fixed to, or the soffit underneath. If those have gone green or grey, you want the full gutter wash below.
I don't do gutter repairs or replacements, and I'll tell you plainly if that's what a gutter needs rather than charging you to clean something that's about to come off the wall.

Gutter clear, or full gutter wash?
When people say their gutters need doing, they usually mean one of two jobs. Not sure which yours needs? Send me a photo on WhatsApp and I’ll tell you.
Gutter clear: your gutters are blocked. I vacuum out the inside, check the downpipe tops, and send you before and after photos. This stops water spilling down the wall. The outside of the gutter is left as it is.
Full gutter wash: they’re blocked, and the outside has gone green. You get everything in the gutter clear, plus I wash the outside by hand from the ground with a soft brush: the gutter fronts, the fascia boards and the soffits. This gets the white plastic white again.

Fascia and soffit cleaning
The white plastic around your roofline goes green on the shaded side and streaky grey on the side that takes the weather. I wash the gutter fronts, fascias and soffits by hand from the ground with a soft brush on a pole. No ladders lean on your gutters. It costs the full gutter wash price above, or from £80 on its own.
Old plastic that’s gone chalky or yellow from the sun won’t look like new again. If yours is like that, I’ll tell you before I start.
Gutters FAQ
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Once a year for most houses on this coast, usually autumn once the leaves are down. If you've got trees close by or a north-facing roof that grows moss, twice a year is money better spent than a damp repair.
Do you need to get on the roof or use ladders?
No. I clear gutters from the ground using a Skyvac gutter vacuum on carbon fibre poles. Nothing leans against your house and nobody goes up.
Do I need to be home?
Not usually. As long as I can get round the property, you don't need to be there — I'll send the before and after photos over when I'm done.
What if my gutters are damaged?
I'll photograph it and tell you. I don't repair or replace guttering, but I'd rather you knew about a cracked joint now than found out in January.
Will it make a mess of the garden?
No. Everything comes out into the vacuum and leaves in the van. That's the main advantage over doing it off a ladder with a scoop.
How much does gutter cleaning cost?
A gutter clear is £65 to £100 depending on the size of the house, or £100 to £170 with the outside washed too. A standard semi is £85, or £135 for the full wash. There’s no VAT on top, and the price I give you won’t change on the day.
Will my gutters look white again?
Only with the full gutter wash. A gutter clear empties the inside and leaves the outside as it is. If the fronts, fascias or soffits are green or grey, ask for the full gutter wash. It’s done on the same visit.
How do I know if my gutters need doing?
Stand back from the house on a rainy day and look. Water spilling over the front edge instead of running to the downpipe, a green streak down the wall under one spot, grass or moss growing out of the top of the gutter, a section that's started to sag, or birds going in and out — any of those and they need clearing. On this coast, if you can't remember the last time, they need doing.
What kinds of gutters can you clean?
All of them — uPVC, aluminium, and the old cast iron on the stone houses round Conwy and Llandudno. The vacuum clears the inside of any of them. Cast iron I'll also tell you honestly if the joints are going, because that's a repair job and not one I do.
How long does it take?
Most houses, 45 minutes to an hour and a half. A big detached with a conservatory, closer to two. It's quick because there's no ladder to move every three metres — the pole reaches the whole run from one spot.
What about the weather?
The vacuum works fine in rain, so a wet day isn't a problem. High winds are — a nine-metre carbon pole in a gale isn't safe over anyone's roof. If it's blowing, I'll ring you the day before and move you, I won't just not turn up.
